Comparison of International Designations of Steel

There are two systems of designating steel grades according to PN-EN standard:

  • alphanumeric system (PN-EN 10027-1)
  • numeric system (PN-EN 10027-2)

Each steel grade is given a symbol and numbe, which indentifies only one material.

In the case of alphanumeric stystem, letters designate characteristics of the steel grade, eg. application, mechanical properties, chemical composition. It enables to identify particular steel grades.

When it comes to numeric system, each steel grade has an assigned number with five digits, which can be used instead of steel symbols. Steel grade numbers are assigned by European Commision for Standardization.

The first digit in the number, "1", indicates that it is a steel. Two follwing digits indicate steel group, and two final digits indicate particular steel grade in the group. Steel group - steels are divided according to chemical composition, mechanical, physical and technological properties, and their application.:

  • quality unalloyed steels: group numbers from 01 to 07 and 91 to 97;
  • special unalloyed steels: from 10 to 18;
  • corrosion and heat resistant alloy steels: from 40 to 49;
  • alloy machine and compression tank steel: from 50 to 89.
